Introduction

Have you ever looked up at the sky at night and wondered where the stars get their twinkle from? Have you ever wondered where the stars go when the Sun is up, and it is bright outside? Do you wonder what it is like on other planets? If yes, then this chapter will answer all your questions. You will get to know more about the Stars and the Solar System.

Celestial Objects

The stars, moon, Sun, and all other objects you see in the sky are called the celestial objects. We will walk along and explore some celestial objects one by one.

The moon changes its shape every day. The complete moon is visible on a full moon day. On the new moon day, i.e., 15 days after the full moon day, the moon is not visible. The next day the moon is visible only slightly till you see a full moon after 15 days. The different shapes of the moon are called the phases of the moon. It happens because, unlike the Sun, the moon doesn’t have its light. It should make you wonder how the moon is visible at night; it reflects the light that falls on it from the Sun. Since the moon revolves around the Earth and Earth revolves around the Sun, hence the different phases. 

Though the moon may appear shiny to us the surface is full of craters of different sizes.

One may have noticed that not all the stars shine equally bright. It may startle you that the Sun is also a star. The stars are also present in the sky during the day time but are not visible because of the brightness of the Sun. The Sun is also a star.

The stars forming a group that has a recognisable shape is called a constellation. Different constellations are visible during other times of the year in different parts of the sky. Ursa Major is a constellation known as the Big Dipper, the Great Bear, or the Saptarishi. It is formed of seven stars and appears like a big question mark. Orion is another constellation that you can see during the winter and comprises seven or eight stars.

The Sun and the celestial bodies which revolve around it form the solar system. It consists of planets, comets, asteroids, and meteors. The gravitational pull between these objects keeps them from spinning.

The earth on which you and I live is a planet that revolves around the Sun. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are the planets that revolve around the Sun on a concrete path, i.e., the orbit. There are five dwarf planets too: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris. It is essential to know that the planets are different from stars because they do not emit their light. They, in turn, have satellites that revolve around them, like the moon. The Moon is a natural satellite, while there are also man-made satellites. Asteroids, Comets, and Artificial Satellites are some other members of the Solar System.

Asteroids are small objects that occur together in large numbers and also revolve around the Sun. Asteroids are visible through large telescopes.

Comets revolve around the Sun in highly elliptical orbits. They generally appear as a bright burning head with a tail. Their period of revolution is also usually more extended than that of planets. An essential feature of comets is that they appear periodically. Scientists observed these comets through telescopes for a very long period before concluding their period. One such comet is Halley’s comet that was last seen in 1986. You can guess the next appearance by knowing that its period is 76 years.

Meteors are another member of the solar system that appear as bright streaks of light in the sky. Do you remember the last time your mother asked to make a wish to a shooting star? Well, the shooting star is a meteor and not a star. The meteor appears to our naked eyes when it enters the earth’s atmosphere occasionally. It moves at a very high speed, and the friction causes it to heat up and glow. As it heats up more and more, it evaporates, and hence the ‘shooting star’ is visible only for a minimal time. 

A meteorite is the body of a vast meteor and can reach the surface of the earth before getting evaporated due to no small amount of heat. Meteorites are a vital resource for scientists to study the material of objects in the solar system.
