Introduction

Transportation in animals and plants is an important biology chapter for the board’s exam. Plants and animals both have an internal transportation system to supply different kinds of materials in other parts of bodies. You must have heard about the veins and arteries that humans have to supply blood to different parts of the body. Blood is not alone as more energy substances are supplied in our body organs via the blood flow. Similarly, plants have xylem and phloem vessels transporting the food and nutrients to the plant’s different parts.

Animals have a complex transportation system used to transport various components of nutrients and blood. The heart is the chief organ pumping blood to different parts of the body, controlling our blood pressure based on different indicators. Apart from humans, other lower animals also have a well-made circulatory and excretory system.

Circulatory System: The body’s primary transportation system takes various nutrients and other essential factors around the body. It consists of blood, blood vessels and the heart. The heart pumps the blood through two different kinds of blood vessels: veins and arteries. There are fine blood vessels called capillaries that are the extension of arteries and veins. Arteries have the function to carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the different parts of the body. The veins in our body are responsible for carrying deoxygenated blood from different body parts to the heart.

Excretion in Animals: Excretion is the removal of unwanted substances from the body. These unwanted substances can prove to be toxic and hence damage our internal organs. The major organs responsible for the excretion process are kidneys, ureters, urethra and urinary bladder.

In plants, we have two types of the transport system that are xylem vessels and phloem vessels. Both systems are responsible for the transport of water, nutrients and minerals. Let’s check the two transportation systems.

Xylem Vessels: The water and minerals from the roots are carried to the plant’s upper parts through xylem vessels. It is a fundamental transportation system in plants and of significant importance. Because plants get most of their nutrients from the soil and water, these tissues are made of dead cells and are stacked against each other to form a cell chain. Xylem tissues are impermeable water.

Phloem Vessels: Phloem vessels move nutrients such as amino acids and sucrose between the different parts of leaves. The phloem vessels are the transport vessels that can transport substances both up and down. This function makes them different from the xylem vessels. The stems are the major plant organs that carry the vessels’ transport portion in the whole plant.

The plants’ transportation system comprises the dead cells and is used as a water and nutrients carrier. The plants have a simple transportation process that gets the water and nutrients from the soil and transports them to the plant body’s upperparts. Plants lose the extra water from their storage system as water vapours. The process is called transpiration. The leaves are used to manufacture food for the whole plant body. The phloem vessels are used to transport the food throughout the plant from the leaves.

Transportation in animals and plants is a complex and important process. It is crucial for the survival of plants and animals. In the plants, we have two major transportation networks, namely the xylem and phloem. In animals, we have a circulatory system and the excretory system that runs in the body.

    Transportation in plants has only two major systems, namely the xylem & phloem. Simultaneously, the animal transport system consists of the circulatory system, excretory system, and other capillaries. The substances transported inside are also different in both the animals and plants transport system.
  2. Why is the transportation necessary for plants and animals?
    Transport is essential for plants and animals because it helps them to carry the necessary nutrients and other factors from one part to other parts of the body. In animals, blood is the carrying medium through which the nutrients, oxygen and carbon dioxide are transported to the whole body.
  3. What is plant transportation?
    Plant transportation is based on carrying essential nutrients and water from the soil to different parts of the plant. Xylem vessels are the major constituent of this work as they take nutrients and water from the soil to the upper plant body. Phloem vessels are other categories of transport vessels used to transport the nutrients from across the plant’s body both upwards and downwards.
  4. What kind of transport system is present in plants?
    Plants have simple transport systems made of dead cells and are categorised into the xylem vessels and the phloem vessels.
  5. How does transportation take place in animals?
    Transportation in animals is complex and is carried out with the dependent functioning of different kinds of transport networks inside the body. We have a circulatory system and the excretory system as major carriers inside the body. The leading carrier inside the circulatory system is the blood – a liquid substance composed of plasma, cells and other nutrients.
